Fernando Enns


Dr. Fernando Enns is Professor of Theology and Ethics at Vrije Universiteit (Free University) in Amsterdam, Netherlands, and Director of the Institute of Peace Church Theology at the University of Hamburg, Germany.

Enns studied Protestant theology at the University of Heidelberg and at the Anabaptist Mennonite Biblical Seminary in Indiana, United States. In 1992 he graduated from the University of Heidelberg with a Master of Theology degree. His topic was, “One Household of God : The Crisis of the Ecumenical Movement: Theological Causes and Newer Concepts.” In the same year he was ordained as pastor of the Mennonite Church in Krefeld, Germany.

From 1996 to 2005 Enns was Director of Studies at the Ecumenical Institute of Heidelberg University, where he received his doctorate in 2001. His dissertation was published as The Peace Church and the Ecumenical Community. Ecclesiology and the Ethics of Nonviolence, co-published in 2007 by Pandora Press and the World Council of Churches.

Enns is a member of the Mennonite community of Hamburg and Altona and vice chairperson of the Association of Mennonite Churches in Germany (AMG). Since 1998 he is a member of the Central Committee of the World Council of Churches (WCC) and member of the German Ecumenical Study Committee (DÖSTA).
